What is a SWP Calculator?
A Systematic Withdrawal Plan Calculator helps you to determine the remaining value of your investment of mutual fund after making fixed withdrawals.
When an individual need to invest a specific amount and withdraw a fixed sum monthly from the invested corpus, calculating these withdrawals and the total matured amount can be challenging. An SWP online calculator simplifies this process. Simply input the total investment amount, monthly withdrawal amount, expected annual return rate, and investment tenure for instant results.
How Does a Systematic Withdrawal Plan Work?
An SWP allows you to turn a lump sum mutual fund investment into a regular cash flow. You choose when withdrawals should begin, how much you want to withdraw and where applicable, how much the withdrawal should increase each year. The SWP calculator estimates how your corpus may evolve by considering the initial investment, the period before withdrawals start, the assumed return during that period, the monthly withdrawal, the annual increase in withdrawals and the expected return during the SWP period.
Formula Used for SWP Calculation
The SWP calculation estimates how the invested corpus may change as monthly withdrawals are made and the remaining balance earns an assumed return.
For a fixed monthly withdrawal:
A = P × (1 + r)^n - W × [((1 + r)^n - 1) / r]
Where :
| A | Estimated corpus remaining after the withdrawal period |
| P | Corpus available when SWP begins |
| W | Monthly withdrawal |
| r | Assumed monthly rate of return |
| n | Number of months |
Annual Step Up in Withdrawals
If the monthly withdrawal is increased every year, the withdrawal amount is revised after each 12 month period.
Wᵧ = W₀ × (1 + g)ʸ
Here, W₀ represents the starting monthly withdrawal, g represents the annual increase and y represents the completed years of SWP.
Corpus at SWP Start
When withdrawals begin after a specified period, the initial investment may first grow at the assumed return.
C = P × (1 + R)ᵗ
The resulting amount C becomes the starting corpus for the SWP calculation.
The calculator's results are illustrative and based on the assumed rates and inputs provided. Since mutual fund returns are market linked, actual investment outcomes may differ.
How to Use a SWP Calculator?
An SWP Calculator helps you assess a withdrawal plan by combining your starting investment, withdrawal requirements and return assumptions. Enter each input below to see how the estimated corpus may change as withdrawals are made.
- Enter the initial investment amount you plan to invest. This is the starting corpus for the calculation.
- Select the SWP start time to specify when you want your withdrawals to begin.
- Enter the expected return on the initial investment for the period before the SWP starts. This is used to estimate the corpus available when withdrawals begin.
- Enter the SWP amount you plan to withdraw at the selected frequency.
- Enter the annual increase in SWP amount to specify how much you want the withdrawal amount to increase each year.
- Enter the expected return during the SWP tenure to estimate how the remaining corpus may change after accounting for withdrawals.
Once you enter these details, the calculator estimates the withdrawals and the remaining corpus over the selected period. The results are based on the assumptions entered and actual investment returns may vary.
How can a SWP Calculator help you?
Calculating monthly withdrawals and the final matured amount can be complex. However, Kotak MF simplifies this process with its SWP calculator.
This tool determines your matured sum based on your monthly withdrawals, making it easier to manage your investments. Calculators like this are transforming how people invest in mutual funds by making the process more straightforward.

What are the different benefits of a SWP Calculator?
The following are some benefits of the SWP calculator:
- Determine appropriate withdrawal amount: It helps you calculate the maximum safe withdrawal from your investment each year, ensuring you do not run out of money during retirement.
- Maintain withdrawal discipline: An SWP calculator helps you avoid the temptation to withdraw more during market volatility, reducing the risk of depleting your funds too early.
- Compare withdrawal strategies: It allows you to evaluate different strategies and select the one that best fits your financial goals.
What are the key factors to keep in mind before opting for a SWP?
Here are some essential factors you need to consider before investing in SWP:
- Identify your needs
Determine why you are setting up the SWP like whether you will be using it to carry out monthly expenses, as a secondary income source or portfolio diversification. This will help you decide the withdrawal amount, duration and frequency.
- Growth rate
Keep your withdrawal rate lower than the fund’s growth rate to preserve capital over the long term. Regularly review your SWP and consider adding more units through fresh investments for optimised returns.
- Withdrawal frequency
You must choose a withdrawal frequency whether monthly, quarterly or yearly—based on your financial needs. Retirees, for instance, may prefer a monthly payout.
- Impact of inflation
Inflation reduces the purchasing power of money over time. Review and adjust your SWP periodically to ensure your investment strategy aligns with inflationary changes.
